What is the chemical difference between detergent and soap?

Can u tell me , what is the difference between a soap and a detergent?

  • Answer:

Soaps and detergent perform the same task... that is removing dirt. One of the difference between soaps and detergents are in their composition. Soaps are made of materials found in nature... and detergents are labeled synthetic *although some of their ingredients are natural*. Another thing, "detergent" refers to household cleaning products which are based on non-soap, synthetic surfactants and which are primarily used for laundering and dishwashing. Another principal difference between soaps and detergents is the way they behave differently in hard water. Soaps form a scum in hard water and this scum will not rinse away easily and is known to turn laundry a grayish hue. The insoluble film it leaves can leave a residue on your laundry much like you would see in a shower stall where hard water is present. On the other side, detergents react less to minerals in water and do not leave this residue. Well, if you live in an area where the water is soft... you will have more success with soaps. Well, soaps have been around for centuries and that they are better overall for our health... and easier on our environment than detergents.

soaps are tte sodium salts of higher fatty acids whereas detergents are the sodium salts of higher sulphonic acids . sops do not produce scum in hard water whereas detergents r equally effective in hard water.

Normally, chemists refer too soaps as the natural products, while detergents are synthetically produced. Both come under the category of "surfactant molecules", having a polar (water-loving or hydrophilic) end, and a non-polar (water-hating or hydrophobic) end. This means that one end dissolves in water and one in oil or grease, effectively "dissolving" the grease.

Detergent is soap plus things called builders that reduce the hardness of the water. Hard water is a problem because of calcium and magnesium ions in it. These ions bond with soap to make a greasy film that is called soap scum. This causes the soap to not bubble as well and makes it harder to rinse off. Detergent has a special substance in it called sodium zeolite A which takes the calcium and magnesium ions out of hard water. These ions prevent the soap in the water from bubbling. In the hard water, the detergent should bubble better than the soap. This zeolite will ion exchange the calcium and magnesium ions (the hard water ions) for sodium ions. Sodium ions do not interact with soap to form hard water, so your clothes will not be covered in soap scum. Sodium zeolite A also has the added benefit of not hurting the environment.

Many people are confused about the difference between soap and detergent. Soaps and detergents are not the same thing, although both are surfactants, or surface active agents, which basically means a washing compound that mixes with grease and water. SIMPLE SOLUTION: Soaps are made of materials found in nature. Detergents are synthetic (although some of the ingredients are natural); they were developed during World War II when oils to make soap were scarce. A major point is also the purpose. Example The main reason for development of shampoo was that “hair became rough and damaged when soap was used to wash hair”, as you mentioned. Thus, shampoo is specific for washing hair. The difference between shampoo and soap These are properties which shampoo should have: Proper detergency without degreasing Ability to form delicate and rich bubbling Easy rinsing Good finish after washing hair Minimal skin/eye irritation No damage to hair Low toxicity Good biodegradability Surfactants are chosen based on these factors. In many current shampoos, the higher alcohol type–anion surfactant provides the proper detergency and forms rich bubbles, and a non-ion surfactant is added as coadjuvant. The reason why more than one kind of surfactant is employed in shampoo is to make better bubbling and to have a more beautiful finish for the hair. In addition to surfactants, many other ingredients are added to shampoo in order to prevent dandruff, to treat the hair, to rinse the hair and to give him/her a fresh feeling, etc. This is the difference between shampoo and soap.
