What are some examples of sublimation other than dry ice?

  • I need the answer for extra cred in science class. Someone answer fast please!

  • Answer:

Water can sublime; when the weather is really cold (well below freezing) but low humidity for several days straight, ice will slowly dissapear even though it never melts. Also when you open the boxes of certian kinds of frozen foods, (like frozen vegitables, pizza, etc) you will find ice crystals clinging to the inside of the box. This ice was not there when it left the factory, it sublimed out of the food on standing for weeks in the freezer. Also, moth balls (naphthalene) and the cakes of stuff they put in the urinals (para dichlorobenzine) both sublime (the chunks gradually get smaller with time even though never melted). In addition, both camphor and menthol will also sublime. In fact many organic solids will sublime; you will probably see bottles on the shelf in the chem lab that have very pure, clear, well-formed crystals that have deposited on the sides (above the level of the rest of the solid chemical). This is usually from sublimation.

Snow and water ice are constantly sublimating. Solid Iodine, also, Zinc and Cadmium (under low pressure), and Naphthalene (moth-balls) are other examples.

Freezer Burn: Sublimation dries out your food. Also, those puck-shaped urinal cakes. Most people think urinal cakes dissolve in pee, but they actually sublime into the air.
