Men have some Oestrogen - where does it come from?
-
So men have a lot of testosterone (male hormone) and as I understand it... a little oestrogen - the predominant female hormone. Testosterone is made in our testicles... but where do we men, get oestrogen from? If women have some testosterone but no testicles (LOL ~ at least none that I've met so far)... where did they get that testosterone from?

Answer:
The adrenal glands release the androgens (testosterone) in much less quantity in both males and females. The testes are the main producers of testosterone in males and ovaries are the main producers of Testosterone in females but in much less quantities. Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Testerone http://users.rcn.com/jkimball.ma.ultranet/BiologyPages/A/Adrenals.html#androgens. Oestrogen is mainly produced by ovariers in females, there are other sources also like placenta, corpos luteum, liver, adrenal glands, and breasts. So males get their oestrogen or estrogen primarily from testes also, a bit from the liver and adrenal glands. Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estrogen http://www.emcom.ca/primer/estrogen.shtml

Some estrogens are also produced in smaller amounts by other tissues such as the liver, adrenal glands, and the breasts. In men, the main sexual hormone is testosterone. This is made mainly in the testicles. The level of testosterone rises at puberty to 30 times the level it was previously. Men normally also have a small amount of oestrogen; at puberty, it rises to only three times the level it was before. This often makes the breast tissue grow slightly in teenage boys (see below), but eventually the high levels of testosterone take over completely and prevent the oestrogen having any further effect on the breast. Obesity is a common cause. If you are overweight, the breasts will of course be larger because they are more fatty. In addition, fat produces oestrogen which stimulates breast development.

A chemical process called aromatization produces estrogen in men from androstenedione (androsterone) and testosterone (often fat in a man’s potbelly are causing him to lose his testosterone and gain estrogen). In females testosterone is the precursor of estrogen in the ovaries.
