Inductive reasoning vs Deductive reasoning?

can anyone give me an example of inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning? i just recently researched about sherlock holmes and he is allegedly using inductive reasoning rather than the inaccurately coined deductive reasoning. i wiki'd inductive reasoning but it doesn't help very much. Thanks.

Deductive: If I know that all football players are men, and I know Pat is a football player, I deduce that Pat is a man, necessarily. Inductive: I've never seen a woman football player. I read that "Pat" is a football player, so I assume that "Pat" is a man.
