Is nursing harder than engineering?

Should I switch my plans from Engineering to Nursing?

  • Hi I have been accepted into a very prestigious Engineering school as I have real good marks. But I am wondering if I should go into nursing for these reasons: 1. Good pay 2. Job Stability / Great demand in future 3. No need for competetion 4. Helping others I'm male, btw. Both seem pretty attractive... don't know what to do.. thanks!

Well, I would definitely look at it from the perspective of WHAT you will be doing when you get out. Engineering is more mental than nursing, especially if you're in design. Engineering work hours are usually more reasonable than nursing. As for your #3, nursing programs are very competitive to enter, there's a shortage of education capacity because there aren't many teachers because they're needed in the field (healthcare shortage). You can definitely help others although more indirectly in Engineering by designing a safety device, or building a bridge, or making cars safer, etc... So, do you want to fix and create things or help people? Both are excellent career choices.

do you take things apart just to see how they work.? How many times have you taken your car apart to try to make the carb run better? Have you ever built a ham radio? If you really aren't doing engineering type things right now then you might not want to go into that field. If you don't dig it you will probably be bored. I know a LOT of engineers who would do it for half the pay. I read a great article about this very subject today. If you aren't tearing stuff apart, building stuff have 3 or 4 unfinished projects laying around then I wonder. In my opinion if you are going into engineering for money and job security you are going into for the wrong reasons. I understand that your list has to do with nursing. Nurse especially surgical nurses will always be in great demand.

all reasons for you is not important to switch Engineering to nursing. In engineering also having Good pay,Job stability/Great demand in future. If you do hard labor then competition nothing.

If you are a people person, and enjoy helping others then nursing would be a good field to go into. As you already said, nursing has good stability and good pay, but many fields of engineering also contain these aspects. If you enjoy math, science and problem solving, then I would recomend engineering. I am in my senior year of chemical engineering, and I am working harder than, I ever have in my life right now, but I enjoy the challenge. By the way long term most engineers will make more money.

yeah, I get alot of nursing students picking at me 'cause they are going into jobs paying close to the starting pay of some engineers....but then I remind them my job uniform is khakis and never have I had to empty a bed pan or insert a catheder.......I dont care if we are a full service civil firm...I dont play that way...hehe....I think in the long run...the civil will be payed more and have more job satisfaction...when Im 60, Ill be a fat-cat on the board for the company...if not president.....they'll just be 60 ys old, probably fat, chain-smoking, multiple-divorcee nurse.........but maybe not....
