    Gauge can be checked by micrometer. The gauges are from 7/0 up to 35 in India. The larger the gauge lesser is the thickness except those specified as x/y. eg. Gauge = Thickness mm 7/0 gauge= 12.70 mm 6/0 gauge = 11.79mm 0 gauge= 8.23 mm 1 = 7.62 2 = 7.01 14 = 2.03 35 = 0.21 I think you misunderstood what the gauge is. The gauge of a sheet or wire denotes the thickness or diameter of it; a sheet metal of some gauge will have thickness same as the diameter of the same gauge. So there is no better or worse gauge. If you are asking grade, well then it will depend upon the application.

you can use micrometre or vernior caliper.

Just use a SWG ( Standard Wire Guage ) or BWG ( Birmingham Wire Guage ) tool. They just have slots in them with the guage stamped next to the slot. Every sheet metal worker will have one. Or if you know what measurement relates to which guage, use either a micrometer or vernier to measure the thickness and then look up what that relates to in Guage. Best guage to use depends on the application.

I don't know what you think gauge is. It is a measure of the thickness of the metal, and can be measured by various methods like a micrometer. It can be as thin as 0.001 inch or as thick as 1 inch. .

a ruler will work 1/6 =12 g 3/16 =7 g 1 /32 = 14 g if you want any thing thicker or thinner s.w.g. i work with steel so i just can tell from looking but it takes practice a S.W.G. is the right tool ( standard wire Gage )
