How long is a piece of string?

  • This question has been asked before with no real answer. However a test was done throwing bits of string on the ground and mesuring the diameter of the pile. This gave the average ratio of the diameter to the length. What was it?

  • Answer:

This doesn't seem to make sense to me. A piece of string is only as long as you choose it to be before you cut it... or only as long as the remainder has been unwound. If you throw bits of string... which are pieces of string in themselves... and only calculate the ratio of diameter to the length, you have already measured the length and thus there is no purpose to the question. Secondly, you do not take into account the force of the "throw" nor the height at which the bits of string were thrown from -- both of which have a direct impact on the diameter of the pile. Increase the force (provided there is no "bouncing") and the diameter will decrease. Increase the height and the diameter will increase.

huh? never heard of this experiment.

The length of a piece of string is exactly twice the distance from the middle to one end.

Having not heard of this experiment, however the length of a single piece of string is as long as you wish it to be. This experiment is not valid because it is completely random and there is no way to determine the proportion of diameter to string length.
