Want to become a genetic engineer. What should I do?

I want to become a genetic engineer...how can I do it?

  • I want to become a genetic engineer...working with and manipulating animal, plant and human genetics. I'm only a sophmore in high school, so what steps should I take (as in college, what types of degrees, etc...) Thank you!

  • Answer:

Well, genetics is a specific area of study in biology, so you'll want to take general biology, molecular biology, microbiology, zoology, chemistry, biochemistry, some basic physics, college algebra, trig, and at least one semester of calculus. That's just for starters. Eventually you'll want to take science courses in mammalian embryology, immunology, some basic neurology, basic and advanced classes in animal and plant genetics. That will give you a pretty well rounded background in biology and biological science. Here's a couple of resources that you might want to make use of: MathTutorDVD.com http://www.mathtutordvd.com/ and The Great Courses www.TEACH12.com These are really, really wonderful science and mathematics DVD courses at a very reasonable cost. I can't tell you how I wish that when I was your age, I'd had this body of information made available to me. Check these courses out they can help you in high-school and in college. Good luck to you and, just go for it and make it happen.
