First of, the other guy is right. Depression ruins your life and you feel like you aren't doing anything right. I had the same problem and it took me 10 years to graduate. You don't realize what a downward spiral it has on you. You can't study because you think you are going to fail anyway, you get too tired to easily. You put impossible pressures on yourself and feel like you are letting your family down. But you won't believe what a difference life becomes if you get a handle on that self hating feeling you got. I'm a product of the 1970's and there wasn't any good drugs and I didn't believe in them anyway. I was brought up a farm boy and I thought I could power thru anything. But the only reason I got my degree in 10 years,...... versus not never,..... was I broke down and took something that helped tremendously. Before, I struggled with every engineering course ,even though I loved engineering, I was terrible at math and long word problems. But it was because I was always thinking of some machine or some design of something other than what I was working on. I hated school work but I loved designing sawmills, electric cars, airplanes , Wankel motors, steam engines, you name it, everything but thermodynamics or numerical analysis. my doctor said, "your depressed you need Prozac." Didn't work, hated feeling like a zombie and I still couldn't study long enough or keep undistracted long enough to get the grades to pass. Then I found the life saver. It was Adderal. Legal speed. Wow, what a difference. Now I could stay completely focused , study for hours and absorb it and actually like it. Then, believe it or not, success breeds success. Once you start passing, it makes you want to keep it up. Plus you get excited because now the teachers like you and other students seek you out for advice and all that. It caused me a major shift in attitude, from hating myself and every one else and feeling like an outsider, to feeling worthwhile and the ideas and future seeming bright I'm not saying it will work for you, but maybe. Plus drugs have come a long way from the 1970's. I heard that Wellbutrin and Stattera etc have much better effects on you without the downsides that Prozac and zoloft used to have. Anyway, get some drugs, don't give up ,and definitely don't worry about losing 2 years. That is nothing and it is your life so don't worry what any one else thinks about you. And don't go into business because the field is flooded with idiots who think they are smart and besides there is massive numbers of people to fight against. Engineering is much more elite and respected. And like the other guy said, the first two years are the boring math based subjects. The next two years you actually get to put it to work and make some machine design and circuit design and more practical use of engineering and it feels like engineering and not math class. Plus the class sizes are smaller since all the the wanna be engineers dropped out realizing how hard it is, so you have more dedicated students and teachers. And the teachers care more about you because they know you went thru basic training and emerged. You are one of the few, the proud. Almost sounds Marine like, huh? Even if you pass with a C, you still pass and that's what counts. Better to finish out 2 more years then start all over in a boring field like commerce. Engineering is always new and creative. Commerce is same ols same old. Count money going in and money going out...snore....

Engineering is not for everyone; if you don't love it, find something else. You tried, which is more than most people can say. You're still young and have plenty of time to decide what to do. Are your parents and neighbors engineers? If they are, they'll understand; if they aren't, you can tell them to go **** themselves. Life's too short to have a job you don't love.

You're in a very similar situation as I am. those around you will understand, but I suggest just finding help in your depression first. Maybe even take some time off before you make a drastic decision. Who knows you might even regret giving up on Engineering. I've switched my major a few times and today my biggest regret was not pursuing my computer science degree in the first place, straight out of high school. But then again that may just be hindsight talking. Now most of my friends have gone to find jobs, while I'm only about two years into into my degree. The way I see it, I'm not in love with programming. But I can do it, and I'm good at it. Put in my hours of work and come home to my family and friends. Life isn't about your career, your career is just there to support your life.

Don't lose interest yet. The first 2-3 years of engineering are just math, physics and intro courses, which at first seem to be senseless and makes you wonder what is the purpose of engineering. Once you get to the last semesters you actually start doing engineering designs and real-life stuff. If you are feeling depressed you must seek help. Depression is more than just emotions. It won't let you concentrate and you won't be able to focus in your education.

First get help for your depression--see a counselor immediately and get your depression treated( it does not mean there is something wrong with you only that you need assistance). Once your depression is under control you will be able to proceed with your studies.
