How do I use the gold sticker that came with my logbook?

Why do people sometimes use gold as a conductor over silver?

  • Silver is a better conductor, it's lighter weight, it's cheaper, and it doesn't oxidize. I know that is a big reason that people use gold over copper because, even though copper is a better conductor than gold, it will oxidize and that can sometimes make for a poor connection. However, like gold, silver also does not have this problem. People obviously use copper as a conductor because it is the cheapest of the three metals. So why would any one ever choose to use gold when it is the most expensive, heaviest, and least conducting of the three metals? If you could list some example I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

  • Answer:

Au contraire! Silver oxidizes quite nicely in the presence of sulfur and a few other things. And I've never heard of anyone using actual gold metal as a conductor, just plating. It could be I just never heard of it, of course. Very often, like with audio cables, it's mostly to get you to buy it over the competition........
