What are the reasons a lot of college students drop out of science, computer science and engineering?

Answer:
Just primarily because it's really hard. When people ask which is the most difficult major in all of college you have to mention engineering...and in engineering Electrical Engineer and Computer Engineering are often put as two of the most difficult engineering fields ...just to give some perspective. Another thing that is particular to CS is that alot of it is unseen, abstract...you have to be able to put together in your head in a way how a computer(memory etc. ) all work ..you kind of have to be able to think like a computer. And there is a ton of math, programming, physics, & circuits in CE..any number of which alone could deter someone.... not just saying this for personal pride or anything but it really is quite challenging...... I have a liberal arts degree and went back to do CE and there is really very little comparison as far as difficulty is concerned. I think you really have to love programming and computers to do CE otherwise it's just too much curriculum to swallow.

They can't handle the class load, don't find it interesting, or start flunking classes. I also saw many students go through CE or CS who really didn't like it, but lacked the courage to stand up to their parents, and go into a field they actually liked. A lot of engineering students think the liberal arts classes are "easier" than theirs. This led to the Computer Science department at my University being in the Liberal Arts College, but with higher graduation requirements than the Computer Engineering program in the Engineering College. This meant if you wanted to be CS at my university, you *REALLY* *HAD* *TO* *WANT* *TO* *BE* *CS*. If you could hack it (heh) you earned the respect of one of the greatest Computer Scientists the University had ever known.

In my undergraduate experience, I saw three reasons people dropped out: chemistry, physics, and calculus.

One reason -- not willing to put in the time or energy required for study

Failure to understand that no-one is going to hold your hand, care if you don't go to classes, or make sure you get up in the morning. Plus, it's harder than high school.
