What do I need to do to be an electrical engineer?

What schools do you need to go to after high school to become a chemical, electrical and a mechanical engineer

  • alright im in the 10th grade and i would like to pursue a career in this field and i wanted to know what i would have to do to get there

  • Answer:

You pick one of the 3 and get a Bachelor's degree (4-years ... most people take 5). Your college really doesn't matter. Get good grades and do projects in your spare time (with friends, clubs, or on your own). The big thing is to make sure that the program you are in is ABET accredited (any college engineering program knows what that means). Also make sure you do internships and/or co-ops (at minimum do one while you're in college). If you decide after that that you want to incorporate the other fields, get a Master's in the other fields (those will generally require about the same number of credits as a second major, but will command more money and open up more jobs. For high school, do physics, chemistry, and math (as many years of each as you can take -- AP is great). Pick the colleges that you might be intrested in, and look at their requirements. Like my college required 4 years of english and 2 years of a single foreign language -- if you don't abide by those you get stuck taking extra college classes.

Go to a technically orientated college.

I went to community college for my first two years, in which you take college level calculus, physics, chemistry, differential equations english and other classes that all engineers have to take. then I went to a four year University to complete my bachelors in mechanical engineering. If you want you could also go straight to the four year university. But the classes you will take your first two years are almost the same regardless of the school. After the first two years you will be taking classes specific to the type of engineer you want to be. As with all degrees you will want to look into getting into the best college that you can that offers your major. Engineering education is not the same as a vocational school degree by a long shot, as Sue would have you believe. Your not going to be an electrician or a carpenter or a car mechanic.

You need a bachelor's degree (4-year) in engineering from a university. There are a lot of folks running around with engineering job titles but they are not ~real~ engineers.

Well, you don't normally become all three, but for mechanical probably one of the best is Purdue University in West Lafayette Indiana. Another good school is the University of Missouri, Rolla. I would call some of your local engineering offices and ask about job shadowing and ask the engineers there where they went to school and what they liked and didn't like about it. They can give you some good recommendations on what to take in High School to help you get there. I know math is a must, and physical sciences and chemistry won't hurt either. good luck, peace

you need to look into vocational schools

impossible

You need to go to a college that is well known for their engineering departments. I would start looking now. Start at the schools in your area first. Then branch out to other schools. A lot of engineering departments are easy to get into. Start loving math right now if you don't already enjoy it. Also try getting in touch with someone who is in the field already and ask them what would be the best route to take and ask them what it is like trying to get into school and what you need to focus on. It is always best to go directly to the source. Who better to ask than someone who has finished school and using their degree. Good Luck!

Hi, I'm a junior at college studying to be a computer/electrical engineer. To become an 'engineer' it would be best to go to a college that has an engineering school and earn a 4 year degree. Going to a tech school is another route, but you may be more likely to end up as a technician (someone that maintains or builds the electrical systems) rather than an engineer (the designer).

Go to a college with accredited programs and pick the field of study you want to pursue. You can do more than one but one is hard enough. :) Look up some schools that are appealing to you based on rankings, location, what you can afford, etc... In high school take math (as far as you can go) and science classes (at least chemistry and physics). Take foreign language classes so you don't have to do it in college (knowing where you might go will help you decide how many classes is enough 2? 3?) Good luck.
