Is petroleum engineering is good?

Petroleum Engineering?....good future or not?

  • Will/Is there high demand in Petroleum Engineers? I mean, I am very worried in what I am majoring in right now!! Help!!

  • Answer:

You need to ask yourself "will there be a need for hydrocarbons in the future"? Petroleum Engineers, along with other geoscience disciplines, specialize in finding, quantifying, and producing natural gas and oil. Like it or not, the world will need hydrocarbons for many, many, many years to come and Petroleum Engineers will be needed to find and produce those hydrocarbons. The pay for even entry level PEs is very lucrative. The starting salary for graduating PEs with a BS degree is upwards of $100,000 per year with a sizable signing bonus from most companies. However, keep in mind that PEs don't ever get to see the "fruits of their labor" unless you consider numbers on a spreadsheet. If you are the kind of person who gains satisfaction from seeing a process or project progress then you may not find Petroleum Engineering very satisfying. I am speaking from personal experience.
