How to become an Engineer?
-
Ok, uh... I want to become an engineer and I'm having a head start right now (currently freshman in High school). I'm wondering how long it takes to become an engineer? How many years of college do I have to get? Can you please list a list of engineering fields I can be in? And if it's possible, can some of you guys please give me advice on which engineering field should I be in? I enjoy designing and putting things together, but I don't like jobs that will depends all on me... For example, like designing bombs, I'm scared with a small miscalculation, I will kill someone that I'm not suppose to kill. Also I do not like jobs that will make me feel guilty. Like if I make bombs, I wil regret making the bombs because i will be killing people, I can't live if I get into these mess... THANKS

In the US, the basic engineering degree is a "four year" degree, though many people take longer, often intentionally. The "big three" engineering disciplines are Electrical, Mechanical, and Civil; though the field is filled with other types of degrees which often cross boundaries. There is electronic, chemical, manufacturing, aeronautical, naval, human factors, and so on. Even within a discipline, there are numerous things you can do. For instance with a mechanical engineering degree you can work in packaging, manufacturing, design, power generation, and so on. Engineering is finding ways to make science useful. I work as a mechanical design engineer and I love it. People come to me with a problem, and they need a device that solves that problem. I come up with a concept, perform calculations to verify that the rules of physics say that it SHOULD work, make drawings to have the parts made, and often times assemble and test the prototype. All the time I have access to other engineers to offer input and make suggestions. Working in the defense industry, I've had to deal with the moral dilema of helping to kill people. If this really bothers you, stay away from the defense industry. The way I see it, the US is still the biggest force for positive change in the world. Our military needs the best tools to do this job that I can make. I'd happily be unemployed if the world were to forsake war, but for now the good guys need the best tools possible. Also, for now I work in naval mine countermeasures. This means that the tools I make SAVE lives. If you want to get into engineering, it is a wide and challenging field. If you like putting together circuits, electrical might be your ideal job. If you like devices, mechanical is the way to go. If you like structures, civil would be good. Choose a direction that interests you.

It takes 5years normally to finish an eng'g course. You can be mechanical, civil, electrical, electronics or chemical engineer. I think there are still other fields of engineering. Designing and Analysis are basic in engineering. Just examine yourself and have choices which eng'g course you are going to take. Don't worry, by the time you finish your course, most probably you will end up as a good engineer thinking more of how to promote the common good than to hurt others. Pray to God that He will guide you in your decision making.

An American Bachelor's degree takes 4 years. You can also get a Master's in another year or two. In some fields, such as Civil (buildings, roads, bridges) you need to get a professional engineer's license from your state in order to approve designs. In others, like aerospace, which are federally regulated, states have no regulatory authority. Some types- Civil- see above- mega structures. Mechanical- devices- robots, cars, engines, pumps... Aerospace-- aircraft and spacecraft- structures, flight control systems, aerodynamics, stability and control, aircraft engines Chemical- design of chemical processing systems like refineries, plastics plants... Biomechanical- prostheses, implants Genetic- design lifeforms by altering their DNA to make them do useful things like make medicines Sounds like you might start with mechanical engineering- working on physical systems you can see. Those are some of the major ones. Bear in mind that complex products, especially potentially life-critical ones like airplanes, are designed by large teams of people with carefully developed design tools, reams of data on material and system performance, and carefully thought out requirements and testing. The system is what ensures safety, so don't let that stop you. Engineering can be a thrilling career choice. There is nothing like seeing something you and your co-workers imagined, being realized. It's an art and a creative outlet as well as an exacting and satisfying application of knowledge. Good luck!
