Should I continue pursuing Engineering?

  • I find it so frustrating that I love science and I have a pretty good interested in math and yet I suck at it. I'm going to be going to college a year from now and I really thought I would be interested in electrical engineering. But after my last test which covered Pre-Calc stuff, I got the most embarrassing score ever! I feel ashamed. It just makes me angry because how can I even think of continuing in such a rigorous field if I can't even pass a simple test? I am a very determined person and I always try to adopt the attitude of working hard at something so that I can achieve whatever it is I want. But the more I get these mediocre scores, the more I think maybe being good at math is hereditary. I mean, is it even worth going over a million problems just to end up not being good enough when I'm faced with a test? I don't want to give up, and I really want to be good at math, but moments like this really make me re-evaluate everything. Has anyone else started out shitty at math? Have you gotten better? Is it worth sticking with an Engineering major?

    You may have got a bad start in your pre-calc, perhaps a bad teacher or a misunderstanding. Is there some particular part you are having trouble with? email me. But if you are at a dead end in math, perhaps you should pursue a different career.... Determination is good, but if you lack the basic math skills, you will never make it at engineering. There are types of engineering that don't use as much as much math..

I may not be the best person to answer this question as I have always been good at math. Having said that, Engineering is a difficult yet rewarding college major. I decided Sophomore year of high school that I wanted to be an engineer. I'm currently a Senior in mechanical engineering with a few months until college graduation. I have taken a few electrical engineering courses and the math in them isn't that bad; however, you may want to get an answer from a EE major. Early on, math is really stressed in Engineering curriculums as a base; however, higher level undergraduate classes usually focus on applications to industry, and therefore most courses focus on projects and many don't even have exams anymore. In an engineering profession, no one evaluates integrals or solves matrix equations by hand anymore. Finite element software and computational algorithms have made life easier; however, you cant just design parts based on blindly taking what a computer spits out without knowing whether or not it is a reasonable answer. That would be a breach of engineering ethics as it is our duty to "hold paramount the safety and well being of the public", so we have to have confidence that the computer is indeed correct. I love engineering and wouldnt be happy in any other major. If you truly enjoy math/science/engineering, you should stick with the engineering major. Professors and teaching assistants always have office hours and help sessions, and there are always other students who could probably help you.
