What does a Petroleum Engineer do ?

  • I am actually an Undergraduate Civil Engineer and I am expecting to graduate spring 2012 I thought about going for graduate studies in Petroleum Engineering... So I would like to know if it is worth to do that whole shift, What a Petroleum Engineering does? Drilling? Extraction? And is there any benefits of holding a BE in civil eng before entering that field ? One last question: Can I find a job in Petroleum Eng easily? is it a well-paid job? I have heard that i wont have a stable life, is that correct ?

    I'm not too sure about the Petroleum Engineering curriculum, but in the oil & petroleum industry, it is mainly divided into upstream and downstream. Upstream meaning drilling and extraction, while it is processing and refining the products for downstream. As far as I know, you don't need a petroleum engineering cert to get into the industry. At least top companies like Shell do hire civil engineering degree holders. Mainly for the upstream industry if I'm not mistaken. I can't answer your last question fully as it really depends on which country you live in. But think about it, even though there are many peak oil theories flying around, I thought that within 20 years, oil will still be the dominant energy source for the world. That's where the big money still lies for now. But this is a high risk industry, accidents like oil rig explosions do happen.
