Should i go for PhD or MS? Also confused between mfe and mechanical engineering.?
-
I took gre recently and scored 1380 ( 800 quant 580 verbal). I wish to pursue higher education in US. I dont have a strong financial background so funding is a problem. Ive heard that in PhD programs getting a scholarship is easier than MS. Now, i dont have any problems with research and all. But i dont want to spend 5 years studying if there is no guarantee of getting a job over there. Ive done BE in mechanical engineering but im more interested in financial engineering program. So this is my second dilemma as to choose mfe or mech engg. Ive also come to know that you get an MS degree en route to PhD. And people quit PhD after they get MS degree if they find a job. Is this legal/ advisable? Help needed.....

Answer:
Yes, PhD programs are much more apt to give funding. Most Universities do not fund you if you are only planning on a master's degree. It is true that many students will enter with the goal of completing a PhD but will stop at just the master's and leave. This happens, and engineering schools in the US are understanding about this. What they get upset with is when students deliberately misrepresent themselves, want to stop at the master's, but say that they want to get a PhD just so they will have funding. Definitely don't do this if you come to graduate school. I am less familiar with financial engineering programs, but would imagine that they are harder to get funded. You should definitely look into this more by contacting some programs directly and seeing how they work. You definitely will not have a problem getting a job in the US with a PhD in either of the engineering disciplines that you mention. Your GRE scores look very good too, and this is a huge plus towards you getting accepted. Best wishes!

To do PhD u need to have Masters Degree compulsory, that is the eligibility criteria for PhD. So now either u choose to do MS or ME. I recommend u to go for MS as masters and then u decides whether to do PhD or not.
