ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN?

What is the difference between an electronics engineering technology and an electronics technician?

  • I am looking to go to school for one of these, I can't find the difference between the two.

  • Answer:

I can understand your confusion there. First of all the one is a coarse title; the other more of a job title. It depends on the school just what is meant by their programs names: generally engineering refers to a more design and manufacturing skill set. Unfortunately the word technician has been used and abused greatly; when the original intention was to designate someone who had completed concentrated study to the associates degree (two year) college level. In general a technician is able to keep records, make repairs, and interpret manuals.

There isn't any difference. Electronics Engineering Technology is just a the name of the program offered by colleges to become an electronics technician or technologist. You should try going to a community college or state university to get the degree rather choosing a for-profit college (Devry's, ITT, etc). Employers will respect your degree more and if some day you choose to go for a full 4-year degree, many of those courses taken could be transferred. Also, prices are far lower in a state college.

Generally speaking, an engineer designs things while a technician repairs/maintains and sometimes installs things. That applies to electronics as well. Also the pay is usually better for the engineer.
