How to design a cable?

What would be the ideal tower height for a cable stayed bridge - (Harp design) with multiple span of 3300 ft.?

  • I am in design phase of UN PEACE bridge across Bering strait. The final design is Cable Stayed Harp one ( covered and heated) with 1 km (3300 ft). long spans, 5 towers, with tower diameter of 2 meters above sea level, 48 meters wide. Total spans are calculated to be 92. Can anyone give an idea about the reasonable height of the cable stay tower from the bridge level, where bridge is about 50 meters above the sea level? Any answers must support engineering theories.. Anyone can eMail it to VARGHESEPHILatYmAiLDoTCOM The answers will be very helpful and will be used for research purpose. • Answer:

Of course the "ideal" design is one with the lowest total installed cost. One basic measure of most steel structures is the amount of steel in the structure. I would suggest you do several designs and see which one would minimize the amount of steel used.

i use midas civil for my bridge design. u can ask for a trial version for serveral months from en.midasuser.com i don't think there is an ideal height but just the forces involve in the design. of course, the bridge decks have to be above the international shipping lanes requirements. this software might require one year to learn. however, free webinars and certificates are provided. u can use the software to design serveral bridges of different heights and see how much forces are involves in cables. the main thing is to avoid the resonance of the cable due to rain, wind and snow while minimizing the material and difficulties of construction. the software will optimize the forces in the cables in a process called fine tuneing of the cables. then u have to import the structure file into midas fea to run for the aerodynamic effects on the structures. however midas fea can only generate a 2d computational fluid dynamic profile. ice sheets and ice bergs on the bridge piers could be a problem. also, i have a book called "materials engineering in the arctic" edited by M.B.Ives published by the american society for metals which might be useful to u.
