What size electric motor is needed to bench test a 400 amp, 15 volt alternator?
-
Building test bench......... want to use single phase electric motor but I don't know how to spec it out. The alternators will be at least 75% efficient. Don't know the formula to calculate what's needed with losses due to belt slippage, heat, wire resistance and things like that. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:
400A @ 15V = 6kVA if only 75% efficient 8 kVA Even without belt slips or other losses, that comes to over 10hp.
