How are various materials recycled?

How to make a Delta Kite with recycled materials?

  • I'm thinking about making an hawk with the Delta Kite design recycled materials. What are some best recycled materials to use for this project?

  • Answer:

    1. Used plastic bags. You may have to tape several together to have a piece big enough for a delta kite. 2. The "sticks." I was lucky. I found a parasol that someone threw out that had bamboo ribs. Maybe you can find a "matchstick" window shade. Or maybe you can find some sticks under a tree at your local park.

Recycled (past tense) materials there's not much. Glass, plastic bottles, flakeboard, ground up road asphalt to make new ashphalt, ground up tires to make kid's playground matting, none of these are light enough weight to umm.. 'fly.' :) You need large plastic sheet (or other material) for wings. Contractors trash bags could do that. But I just looked at a box of Husky contractor bags, and there's no mentioned of recycled (if it were made from recycled it would scream it out loudly.) I checked my Glad kitchen garbage bags and it's not marked that way either. Then you need long straight structural pieces. I can't think of -anything- made from recycled that can do that. Recycled usually means 'this used to be strong clean original material, but it's been ground up or reprocessed and isn't worth much structural value any more.' Aluminum cans could be cut up, fold-seamed together to make a large sheet, and would in fact fly, but I think (for alleged health concerns) they're *not* made from recycled aluminum.
