A very annoying question about chemical engineering and petroleum engineering?

Intro to Petroleum Engineering Previous exam question?

  • A limestone at 1000 ft depth is determined to have a bulk density of 2.0 g/cc and its pores are filled with oil and brine, where Sw=0.50. Assuming a brine density of 1.1 g/cc and an oil density of 0.80 g/cc, estimate the porosity of limestone. I'm reviewing for an exam tomorrow and this was one of the questions from an old exam a year ago. I honestly have NO idea where to begin. I don't even know what "Sw" stands for. Can anyone give me any pointers or hints on where to begin?

  • Answer:

Sw is the water saturation and .5 means 50% water saturation. This should be in your logging textbook somewhere around calculating the oil in place.
