What courses should I take to be able to be a professional electrical engineer?

What main courses I need to take to become a mechanical engineer? (Graduate Applied Math major)?

  • I am graduate applied math major. I plan to become a mechanical engineer. I couldn't get all the courses for the 4 year degree and I am sure that I don't need all of them. I need to know which main courses I need to become eligible for that profession (Analytical Mechanics I (Statics) ,AutoCAD,Fluid Dynamics, etc.). I already know that I don't need a PE license to practice the profession. Thank you.

  • Answer:

I am not an engineer but too am interested ... From my understanding: physics (classical mechanics, etc), analytical geometry (which I'm sure you have), FULL calculus (which I'm sure you have), thermodynamics, materials strength, design, maybe CAD/drafting, testing, etc. Best bet would be to look at several different university's requirements for mechanical engineers. Your degree is a big plus but you will need the engineering courses ... I doubt many companies will hire someone that does not have the technical background and exposure to engineering techniques. It would be a liability calling someone an "engineer" without the basic foundation that people expect of engineers. So ... most likely you will have to go back to school (that's my realization too) to get that exposure. Well wishes! - keV
