Mechanical or Civil Engineering?

Civil or Mechanical engineering?

  • I love both of these fields, but I'm torn as to which major is better for me. The jobs in civil engineering sound more appealing, because I'm interested in building and road construction. However, the subjects in mechanical engineering sound appealing as well. Thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and circuits sound interesting in mechanical engineering while structural and transportation engineering sound interesting too. I am interested in doing design work and would like a job that involves drafting, design, and creativity.

  • Answer:

First, don't just go for the $$. Secondly, mech. pays a lot more than civil. A mechanical engineer can do anything a civil can. After all the real difference is that things civils design aren't supposed to move, so the math is easier. M.E. will give you the broader choices later in your career.

I also want to be an engineer, but I dont know what type. Maybe a Civil engineer? my first choice was a mechanical engineer, but then I realized that in the near future, everything will be done by robots/machines and they wont need people anymore so pick wisely!

my brother is a mechanical engineer contracted out to a major mining company and a few smaller mines in our area. He deal with all things from standard operations to the most technical and confusing machinery used in today's mining scene. Since he works for a private company as well he is also qualified in the more domestic engineering. He earns decent money and works decent hours. I have a friend who is doing civil engineering through the mine my brother is contracted out to. His job earns him a bit more money because of the "danger pay". he loves his job and the not so hands on approach it has. I guess it depends on what you prefer. Try setting up a meeting with a civil engineer and get them to tell you what their job involves, the basics of the industry and what to expect. Then do the same with a mechanical engineer. This way you can see which you like better and work form there. They are both career opportunities that will take you far. all the best :)

Do whatever you enjoy the most, otherwise you might end up miserable. Don't do it for money, that will come no matter what the field if you really enjoy the work.

both M.E.'s and Civil's take a circuits course as part of the curriculum. Mechanicals have a much broader job base and can be hired in any and all industries giving you much more choices. as far as pay goes, M.E.'s earn ~$2K more after graduation, but after that it all really depends on the individual and industry. Drafting and design are heavy in both majors. If you are really interested in designing/building buildings, bridges, etc. i would say go for structural engineering. The best thing you could do is talk to an experienced professional in both fields at the school you are looking at attending and see what they have to offer you.

I'm sorry, but robots can't design a new product that would appeal to humans, and there has to be an engineer to take care of the mechanical robots when that time comes. With mechanical, you can go in a variety of industries, so it's broader than CE, and it makes more to boot. Besides, with the housing market down, CE"s will have some problems. With an ME degree, at least you can relocate to another industry easier.

Civil engineers are some of the lowest paid engineers out there and the job market for civil engineers is abysmal. Over 500 civil engineers have been laid off or reduced to part time in Florida over the past year and it doesn't look like it is not getting any better.
