Mechanical or Civil Engineering?

Which is better: Mechanical or Civil Engineering?

  • I am currently taking Advanced Diploma of Engineering at TAFE and am planning to use that to get into university to obtain a bachelor's degree. But this AD is more (or specifically) of Mechanical rather than general or any other kind/field of Engineering. I currently want to be a Civil Engineer because i sorta like designing. Im also interested in Mechanical but thinking of machines, engines, etc scares me right now since i don't really know about them. I know it's just been a month since i started school and i know i'll eventually learn about them but still i want to (slowly but surely) settle my thoughts/self now. Which of the two is better to take? Which is more flexible? Has anyone here done this? Please enlighten me. Thank you. PS. I live in Mansfield, Brisbane, QLD, Australia. Where can i buy engineering books for a reasonable/cheap price? (specifically car related ones since im currently interested in them) Which books should i try to read to be enlightened?

  • Answer:

It depends on what you're in to. Civil engineering involves the design and construction of civil projects, like bridges, dams, buildings, roads, infrastructure, etc. Long term work and jobs are promoted, and usually these projects need to be able to last for decades or centuries in the environment. Also, you'll have to deal with budget restrictions and deadlines. Mechanical engineering is very diverse, but covers the design and production of mechanical systems. Electronics, computers, machines, aircraft, etc. all tie into mechanical as well. With a mechanical engineering degree, youll be very useful to a number of employers and will probably have more options.

Everybody can have their own opinion on which of the two is better but I think you should do what you want...it seems that you are most interested in civil engineering so I think you should try that.
