  Mechatronic engineering is a combination of topics from electrical, mechanical and controls engineering and is mainly focused in automation, robotics and any sort of programmable mechanical device. Mechanical engineering is more general, and you learn different disciplines which allows you to follow different career paths such as mechanical and structural design (design of solid components, engines, moving parts, etc), thermodynamics (effect of temperature over objects), fluids, automation, etc. In other words, mechatronics is very focused in automation. Mechanical is more general but prepares you to choose different careers paths. They are both relevant and necessary since they focus in different things. If you are not sure about dedicating entirely to automation/robotics, you should just follow mechanical engineering since it gives you more options.
