Any engineers out there? I have some questions.?
-
I have 2 questions, please answer any one of them if you like. I am going to Carnegie Mellon this fall to study engineering. Many people I talk to don't even know the school. From my researches I found that cmu is one of the best engineering schools in the world, still its name is not as loud as Colombia or Cornell. Would it be much easier to land a good job if I were to graduate from an Ivy league or a famous, well known university like Harvard or Yale? I know engineering involves a lot of mathematics, computer programming, and science. But what exactly are some of the jobs that engineers do? How and where does an engineer work?

Answer:
Carnegie Mellon is a great name in engineering. I'm from Ohio and I've heard that name being in the top ten forever. Engineering schools have different "loudness" than traditional programs. I think you hear those names like Harvard, Yale and so forth for MBA and law (but seeing how bush graduated from both of those, their status has dropped in my view to lower than a community college, I wouldn't go to either for free) The big engineering schools are yours, MIT, CALTECH, Stanford, Georgia Tech, Case Western, and a few more. MIT and CALTECH might get you some more pay, because they are the Ivy league schools of engineering. But don't worry, engineering is such a difficult program anywhere you go , and so few are capable of it, the competition is rather limited and that makes you pretty exclusive compared to the rest of the grads. Her's a good link to the Occupational handbook put out by the government on job descriptions and outlooks every year: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos027.htm

You can't go wrong with CMU. Although an Ivy carries prestige, engineering employers don't just want to see a university degree, they want to see that you have practical experience. Try doing undergraduate research and get an internship or two. Internships are hard to come by in the current economy, but you really should try and get one before you graduate. That's what you should worry about if you want to get hired. By the way, public schools like UC Berkeley are pretty awesome, and we're not Ivy. If you can name it, there's a good chance engineers had a hand in creating it. Mechanical engineering is especially broad. A whole book could be written about this stuff, so I'll simply suggest you keep trying to find resources online and in libraries, etc. People with engineering degrees also don't necessarily go into engineering careers. Graduate or professional degrees like law, business, or even med school (med school esp for bioengineers) are an option. Employers like engineers because of they have good skills and are capable of learning. After all, a bachelor's degree is foundational. It gives you a set of knowledge to work from, and is a signal to others that you are capable of learning and thinking.

Engineers are pretty much involved in any scientific research and development. Engineering is a very high demand profession. Depending on what field of engineering you're majoring in, you can practically land a job anywhere. For you question about colleges companies that higher engineers know what the best engineering schools are. So graduating from CMU if your statistics are correct, companies will be very interested in you working for them.

there are soooooo many kinds of engineers for one specific field even. I'll name a few. In electronics, a Test engineer designs test fixtures and finds different ways to test certain products. A design engineer either designs the product or designs certain parts of the product.. and then there are system engineers , applications engineers,,,etc.... ok..so that's one thing.. the next thing is what you will actually be doing. Which are a lot of things, an embedded engineer basically works with microcontrollers and programming languages. A RF or communications electroni engineer works with wireless, fiber optics, and whatever of communications. a chip design engineer designs chips.. so as you can see, there are so many. You have to find exactly what it is that you want to do

First it doesn't matter where you go to school really, i'm a computer engineer and i want to a trade school and a community college because i didn't afford a big time univ at the time. I landed my first job doing phone support to build up my knowledge of the things and issues people threw at me making 40K which was good for starting off, once i got the experience which is what 90% of the employees look for, after your first couple it jobs you'll start getting job offers like twice a week like i did until i found what i really like and that's what i do now with computer routers and switching support with cisco making VERY good money. Once you finish school your consular should let you know where jobs are or the school job boards or look on monster or careerbuilder.com.. Once you get the experience under your belt degrees really dont matter, people are looking for people that have already been there..

i dont know who you talked to, but CMU is one of the best schools for engineering and computer science and other stuff. If you got into Carnegie Mellon, go for it. Any prospective employer has heard of the school

Hey, Congratulations on gaining entrance to CMU! CMU is an excellent school. If I may offer a suggestion, figure out what sort of job or career you want, then worry about the school. It sounds like you have earned your way into a college without having a clue as to what you want to do. Since you have already made it to CMU, why don't you contact a consoler at the school? They definitely can explain the different choices for a future Engineer. The right job for you shouldn't necessarily depend on the school you go to, but more so on what interests you. With a degree from CMU, that choice will be yours!

First off, you need to look at Engineering rankings of schools if your going into engineering ;). CMU is one of the top. there are so many different jobs an engineer can do. Im in mechanical engineering and JUST in mechanical engineering there are so many different ways to go. I want to do Control systems and system modeling (eg. designing controls for say a car like Cruise control or anti-lock brakes). Some of my friends want to go into design (creating parts and machines). Other people like thermodynamics and heat transfer, or structural analysis. There are manny different jobs in each field of engineering.
