Is there a website that will calculate distance?

How do you calculate a person's bowling power?

  • So my physics class is starting a new unit and we have to figure out how to calculate a persons power when bowling if given the ball's weight, the time to swing the ball, the horizontal swing distance, the time for the ball to roll down the lane, and the lane's length. I have no idea how to do it, so if someone could show me how to do the equations and get the answer it would be very appreciated. But if you don't know how to do it but you know a website for it I would also be very grateful :)

  • Answer:

Power is rate of doing work. Work is force x distance or alternatively torque x angle (in radians). Power would thus be: Force x velocity (velocity being distance per unit time) or alternatively Torque x angular velocity (radians/second). The time for the ball to roll down the lane will allow you to calculate the release velocity, if you assume that the ball does not decelerate appreciately en route. The time to swing from zero to the release velocity and the distance of the swing will allow you to calculate the acceleration and knowing the mass of the ball will allow you to calculate the force (or torque).
