Is it possible for a CIVIL ENGINEER to become a professional ARCHITECT?

Is it easy for an engineer to become an architect?

  • I am majoring in robotics and looking to move towards are more art/design related jobs like architecture. I'm not looking to start my education over, just want some advises for getting into the field

  • Answer:

It is almost certain that the skills you trained in for robotics have nothing to do with architecture. Architecture is a design profession and other than certain minimums, the complicated engineering type stuff that you might have been (but probably weren't) exposed to would be done by structural engineers for a building designed by an architect. Depending on how general the base courses your college required (say like M.I.T. does) you might be able to thrash through architecture in 2 years, although 3 years is far more likely. Trained as engineer for 2 years and looked at architecture seriously, then went in different direction completely.

the academic training for an architect is very different from the electrical engineering training. given the competition for all jobs in today's economy, I'd guess you would find it extremely difficult to get a job in architecture based on your robotic training. be prepared to work for a very low pay, or none at all until you can convince someone that you can contribute as a designer or architect because they have no reason to hire you based on no applicable course work or experience.

to be a engineer it dose not mean that you will have to be architect , their are lots of fieald like a softewear engineer like this their a lots of places

Any engineering branch is a easy spring board to jump to another engineering field. Sometimes they are far apart, like in your case. All the same, it should not be difficult. In cases where fields are far apart you may require 3 to 4 years study after having engineering in any field. It depends on university. If it is the same university there will be some advantage. As long as aptitude is there why not move on? Best of luck.

you can do a job related to robotics and also enroll for civil engineering by correspondence directly in the second year many universities offer correspondence programme this way you will be able to utilize your time earn some money and gain some valuable experience

I have a suggestion for you to combine your engineering education with your art/design inclination. Do a post-grad course in Industrial Desgin. This requires you to be either an Eng or arch grad. You will specially love the parts about ergonomics that dwell into human engineering for user comfort.

I consider architects as "artists" and their profession is similar to that of cosmetic surgeons. You would admit that the real surgeons are more in need and similarly engineers do much more than architects. Engineers deal with equations and find solutions to complex problems. Architects well I would say, need imagination

To become a registered architect you need to complete a 3 yr minimum masters at an accredited university, then be an intern for 3+ years, then take a difficult set of tests. Even if you dont want to be registered, you'd still have to go to school for architecture to be hired by a firm. There is plenty of competition from other arch grads and i seriously doubt you'd get hired without an architectural education, especially right now. The building industry is doing terribly. If you were ok just doing something related to architecture, you could look at the more related fields of engineering, but either way, you'd have to get more schooling. But if you have an engineering type mind, def look at industrial design. Pretty cool.

they both tough fields
