Is voltage an intensive property?

What are precautionaury measures are to be taken when I am doing Low Voltage measurements ?

  • I am doing a superconductivity experiment where I need to measure the voltage drop across a the specimen which exhibits the property of Superconductivity. I am getting in the data thro' a NI DAQ card. Please advice me on the precautionary measures that are to be taken to minimize errors.

  • Answer:

If you are measuring the voltage drop across a very low impedance circuit, you will probably need to first amplify the signal. Depending on the NI DAQ car you are using, the card may not have enough gain to get a good quality reading. Also, you need to consider the input impedence of the signal amplifier (or the NI DAQ card) The input impedence of these devices may be in the 10's of Megaohms, but it will throw off the measurements if you do not take them into consideration. I almost forgot, you need to also consider the resistance of the leads from the NI-DAQ card to the specimen under test. JeffM

for low voltage measurement see to that the current is minimum..and also there must be impedance matching between the stages...and also the resistance must also be not to high as it may cause power dissipation.

The crucial aspects of low voltage measurement are ground loops, background noise, and lead loss through impedances. Background noise can be reduced by using shielded leads (coaxial or triaxial cables) for the connection between the meter and device under test. To prevent ground loops from causing errors, the cable shield should be connected at only one end. Otherwise differences in potential at the two end grounds can cause erroneous meter readings. Third, lead loss due to impedances can be reduced by using a volt meter with a very high input impedance (10Mohm or higher). Make sure to follow the other measures when using a high impedance meter because they are susceptible to ambient background electrical noise.

Your meter impedeance should be high. use agood digital volt meter with good resalution
