What to choose: business or electrical/computer engineering?

Why do people choose business as a major?

  • Business majors are so abundant - with that there is a wide range of quality. Most business majors are just completely inept and chose the major because it was a fallback. No wonder their starting salaries are not as high as engineering and other technology branches. We need to implement science and math into schools so we can engender interest in these branches. What do you think is the most well-rounded, challenging major to choose? I would have to say engineering.

  • Answer:

Where would you be as an engineer if you didn't have managers to organize you and your peers? If you didn't have sales people to sell your services? If you didn't have an accountant for your record keeping or a financier to evaluate new projects? There will always be a need for business people, just as there will always be a need for engineers. Business really is a well-rounded major, if not the most well-rounded. You can take a very wide-array of jobs coming out of college. Can you explain what makes engineering so "well-rounded?" -You are right, there are more CEO's that have an engineering degree, but it is still less than 25%. Over 75% of CEO's are something else. Business administration is 20%, Economics (Business related in many schools) is 9%, which added together is more than engineering. That doesn't even include accounting, finance, human resources, and other business fields that CEO's might have majored in. Be careful generalizing people by saying "most business majors are just completely inept." For example, most engineers are overpaid nerds and all they do is design bridges. Maybe you are just misinformed, or the business majors you know are part of those who are not as intelligent. Don't be so close-minded. edit: and you would be a great project manager, but can you manage people?

I've seen this a million times. Freshmen (and FreshWomen) start out with a major in Engineering, Physics, or Chemistry. Then when they can't handle the coursework, they switch to Business.

I think that people major in business thinking that it will give them enough knowledge to do a number of things. It may not be the best jobs but you can use a business degree in so many careers.

Unfortuately, they end up telling the rest of us what to do, while buying up mortgage backed securities for our retirement funds. Makes you think, doesn't it?

I'm sure there are a lot of people who also paid for their education with the help of an employer. Many employers offer to pay a percentage, but the employee has to learn something that bridges to the employer. Yes, they are abundant but there are plenty of opportunities available for business majors. It may not be well-rounded per your standards, but what pleases some doesn't please everyone. Yes, there needs to be more passion about teaching. Science and Math are taught, but by who? That's the center of the issues. Since you feel so strongly, I would recommend that you teach the youth. The subject matter is awesome - it's the delivery that will drive it home! We need better teachers!

Engineering isn't all that diversified. Engineers we work with in medical research and develop lack a fundamental understanding of life. They expect tight data and hard numbers but research using live organisms simply does not produce that. I think cross disciplinary majors are more well rounded. Business majors are not there for an education so much as training. I am not saying its a bad thing, I am all for training. But education and training are two different things.

Engineering isn't exactly well-rounded - it's more like specialization. As for challenging - that depends on the person. Some people are good at engineering tasks and concepts and find the program easy. The choice that is best for you is not necessarily best for everyone. You need to open your eyes and see things from another perspective sometimes.

b/c finance and money is an important part of life and business is the first step to being a capitalist. all the other fields are really specialized, so not many people can go into them if they don't have a special interest in them. although I'll say the social sciences cover a majority of subjects, i.e. sociology, but there are lesser specified careers in these fields.

every business needs people to run it and probably the easiest major to get a job with people do it for the money I also believe we need more math and science in schools to get people interested in other things
