How to make a wind generator?
-
I have an old welding machine(which is basically a generator) that can make up to 250 amps. Can and how do I make it into a wind turbine and how do I hook it up to an U.S. standard house hold curcuit beaker. What other equipement do I need to possibly cut down my energy cost(i.e. car batteries, or larger capacity batteries) and is it worth my cost to build a frame to mount it to my roof or build a tower for it, to reap the benefits of wind generated power from scrape material.

Answer:
this is a very simple process to do. first get about 10 ft of wire.(must be coated with a wax or resine. you can get at radio shack for a couple of $) then wind this around the motor. sand off both ends of the wire and connect to battery. if you do not have a motor get a couple of magnets (also can get at radio shack) and tape or glue to axle. put in the wind and you have a turbine.

The welding generator is likely made to put out Amps, without much control of voltage. This would make it hard to use it for anything else. You *might* be able to get a motor specialist to re-wind it for use as a generator to charge batteries, which could drive an inverter for whatever voltage your house need, *then* you would need to get turbine blades that would rotate the generator at the wind speeds you have available. Might be easier to buy a "wind charger" off-the-shelf.

You've probably got a DC generator there. Your house uses AC. Even if it's an AC generator, you'd need some very complex controls to keep the frequency and current within limits with a variable source of energy like a windmill. If you want a windmill/battery/inverter system, you're much better off with an automotive alternator. If the old welder works, sell it to someone who can use it.

I have absolutely no idea how to build a wind turbine myself, but I recently found a resource that you might be interested in. The Poor Man's Guide to Wind Power and Battery Systems is an ebook that might tell you exactly what you need to know to tackle your project. The gentleman who wrote the book is Richard Lewis and he claims he can teach you how to how to make a 1,000 watt wind turbine for less than $150.00. I don't know how closely his strategy will fit with yours, but it might be a good place to start.
