Using pressurized tank of water to extract CO2?
-
Would it be possible to extract reasonable amounts of CO2 from the air by injecting regular air into a tank of water under pressure? In my thinking, at the correct pressure, the CO2 would dissolve while the O and N would not and could then be released at the top of the tank. After the water was saturated, the pressure could then be released and pure CO2 could then be harvested. Does this scenario work? Would it be a cost effective way of getting CO2 for industrial use?

Answer:
There are much more efficient solvents for CO2. They are used all the time to purify certain natural gas streams. They are more cost effective than using water. There are also molecular sieves that do a better job.

I don't think there is enough CO2 in the air to make that any where near a feasible idea.

An interesting idea. It would certainly enrich the gas bubbling out of the water in CO2. I've worked on drilling rigs and seen drill strings pulled up from about 200 metres, where the pressure on the water was about 20 times atmospheric, and the water fizzed like a drink when you open the can. Just out of curiosity I tasted a mouthful, and it didn't have a CO2 tang to it. But some natural springs where the water emerges from depth are naturally carbonated because there's a high concentration of CO2 as well as high pressure down there. Would your idea be cost effective? In my opinion possibly. Most of the energy you expend in compressing the air could be recovered when it expands again. Unless I've missed something, you should look into it. But I'm not a professional engineer. If it works, it could be part of an energy-efficient way to sequester CO2.

CO2 is the most abundant gas in our atmosphere and is a contributor to the greenhouse effect our planet is being affected by as we speak. It also is extremely stable and a tough bond to break. Pressure will have no effect at all. Look up lime (used in cement) production, it's easy to produce.
