I don't think engineering should be something you do for any ulterior motive. If you like machines then be a mechanical engineer, if you like bridges, buildings and big structures then became a civil or structural engineer. If neither gets your juices flowing, then do civil. You can be a resident engineer and basically run a site then get promoted to project manager. It helps to love buildings but the job is managerial in nature. The scope is wider for a mechanical engineer, because there are all different kinds of machines. But civil and structural does it BIGGER. And we often get out in the fresh air, and see beauty from brand new vantage points.

Now a days Civil Engineering is considered better than mechanical. Mechanical is so-so branch, a mechanical engineer will earn bread and butter undoutably, but a civil engineer now a days can earn much more.

It depends from which country you are in. In India, 8-10 years back Mechanical was considered better than civil any day. But today the same cannot be said so. With the country going through a construction boom, civil engineers are in great demand. As now the challenge for the country is to build strong structures in short time, which is the biggest challenge for civil engineers today. Mechanical any day is a versatile field with scope for job opportunities in various fields. Automobiles, Production in Manufacturing Industries etc Basically it depends on your aptitude and inclination towards a particular subject, but opportunity wise both have opportunties galore today. I am Electrical & Electronics engineer by the way.

in the philippines, civil engineers are more in demand than mechanical. I would say, it depends on the place you intend to work with.

Depends on what country you are in. Best to google "salary" and go to one of those sites where it tells you the average min and average and average max of a profession. (for your country) HOWEVER Note that Civil Engineering is linked with the countries' economy. IF the economy is in a boom then lots of projects and developments for civil engineers. BUT if the economy is in a recession, not many projects but same amount of civil engineers all competing for the same jobs. Then you’re f***ed. Also once an area is fairly developed you will probably have to move around for jobs. Some people like to travel others don’t. so those are the things you should consider. But IMO I'd say Mech Engg is better.
