What's the difference between amps and watts?

What is the difference between volts, amps and watts?

  • Its been bugging me for a while now and the wikipedia explanation twisted my melon man, i always assumed volts related to how powerful the electric was but it seems i was frikin wrong, what are volts, amps and watts.

  • Answer:

You had assumed right, actually. Volts IS how much "pressure" the electric-ity has got. So lets say you are running a room heater with this volts (i.e. -- pressure). Then if you have higher volts, that'll force MORE current ( i.e. amps) through that ol' heater. Amps is how "fast" that ol' electric flows through those wires. That is - how much electric charge is going through every second. Right ? And that heater'll glow hotter n hotter. Now we gotta figure how much hotter that heater gets. And thats where we multiply Volts (pressure) x Current (flow).

Picture electricity as water. Volts are the water's pressure. Amps are the water's volume. Watts are the water's power or ability to do something like put out a fire using its volts and amps. Like a water hose with an adjustable nozzle, when you make the nozzle smaller, the water comes out with more pressure (volts). When you make the nozzle bigger, the water comes out with more volume (amps). Electricity is the same. High voltage will arc through the air but unless it has some current too, it is harmless like static electricity. High current will melt a wire but without some voltage it's harmless, like your car battery. The formula for figuring power is P (in watts) = Volts X Amps. A 12 volt battery that puts out 5 amps can make 60 watts of power. Take the battery voltage up to 24 volts and you can get 120 watts of power. That's why portable drills with higher voltage batteries can make more power.

It is quite difficult to explain if you did not study electricity. Some of my friends still confuse about these. The best is to study a little bit more of electricity starting from simple calculation of ohm's law instead of asking people to explain. Because we cannot see electricity with our eye , we can only see by actual test and measurement.

Volts are a potential difference and can be thought about how far away a field strength and how strong it is, that attracts or repels electrons (Millikan's experiment can also help) Amps are how fast the current of electrons is going through Watts is how fast energy goes through Volts are (kgm^2)/(s^2c) Amps are (c)/(s) Watts are (kgm^2)/(s^3)

Watts are the measure POWER intensity. ooo power. Volts are the frequency of the power. oooo. So if you want more energy, you can increase the watts/power or increase the volts/frequency of that power. Amps=Watts/Volts. You have a breaker box in your house to make sure that not too much power goes through the wires at once because it could get too hot and cause a fire. So if you try to draw too many Watts, the Amps increase because it gets too hot. unless you pull those amps through faster at a higher voltage. making sure not too much power at any one spot on the wire. so if your breaker is 15 amps and you want to increase the power/Watts drawn through the breaker, you'll need to up your voltage. Because if you have 110 volt system w/ a 15 amp breaker, the most watts you'll get is 1650. If you pull more than 1650 watts through the 15 amp breaker at 110 volts, it'll blow the breaker to prevent a fire. Which is why when they need to power a lot of lights in a room, they often will use 220 volt system. So they can pull the watts through the breaker faster and double their wattage by doubling their voltage. They'll then have 3300 watts to work with and get more light under the same 15 amp breaker.

"Watts" is a unit of power having the dimensions (energy per unit time): M L2 / T2 divided by T = M L 2 / T 3 "Volt" is a unit of force (F=ma): ML / T2 So that "Amps" have the dimensions: L / T
