What can I do with a bachelors degree in engineering management?

Is an Engineering Management Degree acceptable education for a position as an Engineer?

  • I would like to work towards becoming an Engineer (preferably quality engineering). I am torn between pursing my BS in Mechanical Engineering or my BS in Engineering Management. I have engineering experience and ASQ,SME, & ASME Certifications but it seems evident a degree is a must. Will the Engineering Management degree suffice for a position in Engineering if the Educational Requirements state a Bachelors degree in Engineering? Thank You, Chris

    Hi the difference is one is hands on engineering which means getting your hands dirty and the opposite really means supervising others and taking the kick back when things go wrong the choice is yours but management is the less demanding physically and more responsibility.

Yes it is acceptable. Especially since you have those certifications. You might not get paid much starting out, but you can definitely get a job as a Quality Engineer. Also, if you have the time and money, try to get your Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt Certification.

You eventually become a manager from doing whatever engineering discipline to start with anyway. example, you study civil engineering, work as a civil engineer.....after 5-10 years you will become a manager anyway, so engineering management is sorta limiting your opportunities i guess.

I think Engineering management would be acceptable for your purpose. But in my Idea, Industrial Engineering is the best choice for you that it's good fit with your experiences and certifications.

Only an employer can answer that question but from a practical standpoint, a mechanical engineering degree is the most flexible choice and the one I would follow if I were you.
