Why flood on Orchard Road? What should be done?
-
A heavy rain caused major flooding on Orchard Road yesterday, with luxury retailer Hermes, fast food outlets, and a few other shops were completely underwater. The water level on the road was about half a meter deep, making the roads impassable to traffic. This was not the first heavy rain in Singapore, which seems to have very good drainage systems. Some say it was partly because of the bad road works after the construction of Orchard Ion. In your opinion, why had the heavy flood happened for the first time at Orchard? What should be done to prevent this from happening again in rainy seasons?

Answer:
This is because of a choked drain somewhere in Orchard Road. This happened because the heavy rain blocked the drain. The other reason is that there were 3 earthquakes in the Papua province of Indonesia, causing a tsunami which also added up to this flood. To prevent this, the government of Singapore should set up drains that never get choked. Even high-class restaurants like the Wendy's was affected by the flood. It caused a millions of dollars of loss to the restaurant. Not only that, many shopping malls were also affected. Many vehicles were toppled down by the flood and some drained in the flood. This resulted in the owner of the vehicles to send the for for a repair. Some had no choice but to purchase another one. It has been confirmed that it will take 4 complete weeks to turn this Orchard River back to Orchard Road. Singaporeans are shocked because this is an unexpected incident. The worsening thing that adds up to this is that the flood took place in Central Singapore. In my opinion, I don't think that this will happen again as Technology has been improving rapidly. I am definitely sure that this incident has the slightest chance to happen in the future. It would be good to the citizens and PRs and those living here if there will be no more floods in Singapore.

I say it's climate change. Singapore usually don't flood and compared to other countries in Asia, we're quite "dry". I'm not an expert but i believe that this rare event won't be happening too soon. Then again if it does, we might have to wear goggles every time we're going down to Taka or Ion. ;)

i guess it is due to the rapid development in orchard road. new buildings keeps `popping' up...but are the drains being widen or upgraded to keep up with theh developments? previously when there were more `open' spaces and field...the water can be absorbed into the ground. now with all the recent concrete and new buildings the water have nowhere to go but into the drains. i will hate to see the day when news flash comes on tv saying that orchard mrt tunnel flooded!! first was bukit timah...now orchard road...where next?!!

The whoever in-charge have to ensured that regular stringent check on all works involved and the cleaners are doing it right and not just swept to show what is seen. Please do note that Orchard/Scotts junction is infact a valley's lowest point with most build up area and all roads become natural drains. Therefore drainage system is the most critical one.

Singaporeans usually look confident. Maybe, we had usually appeared bright in the region. We shine constantly but this time nature teaches us a good lesson. Don`t be over-confident or don`t relax. The reason of the flood is simply chokage; but the damage is huge enough to stain our reputation. It has already started to loss some ; an example in a global conference/seminar at MSRS recently. The Government spent good money on soft and hardware to make things work effectively. Maybe,as the PAP government had said an opposition is necessary to pep,so should the Government considers having an independant group/observer to spot check their operations..

wow! Another freak event happening in every 50 years? Or is it another unforeseeable and honest mistake that let one legged JI member escape? That's what Singapore politicians are good for, are they? We heard that all before. Can't they stand up once and admittedly say they're responsible? What now? PUB just came up with statistic figures saying 2 billion dollars were spent upgrading drainage system for the last 30 years and they are still constantly upgrading now... but no grate grills was added to filter debris this time at Orchard Road. What a joke. Perhaps it's time for them to consider installing flood gates and incur "Flood Charges" for every cubic litre of water flush off the road, that will make Singapore a Merlion city. One that sucks money from tax payer and spit excuses. Oh yes... It's another act of God alright, each and everytime, this is one big drama choreagraph and played by our very own Pay Never Enough party, and guess what? Mcdonald's is saying I'm lovin' it..

I think the government should seriously look into it.Too much effort has been put into developing this area into a wonderful place and nevertheless has overlooked into the drainage systems. The development of this big vacant land sitting opposite Wheelock into Orchard Icon maybe the causes for this flood.Just for few hour rain and it caused such a bad flood and I cant imagine how this area and other areas will turn out if the rain continues for few more hours or even days. The next thing the government should do is looking into our MRT tunnel and make sure the tunnel is not flooded should there is heavy rain in future. We have a lot of tunnels now and if the drainage systems is not good or properly monitor it may causes serious damages and consequences. Thus I urges the relevant body not too occupy with development only. Really the recent flood has damaged Singapore reputation internationally. It could have prevented if proper drainage systems has been devised and constructed prior to all the development in this area. Singapore is a very small country surrounded by sea and recent years have seen quite a number of new buildings in Orchard and Shenton Way area, is it safe??

workers sleeping, never go clear drain chokage.....govt should go wake up ALL agencies people to wake up and don't be complacent on their own respective system and work process

The relevant authorities should already be looking into it. I don't think they will allow the same situation again if they can help it, cos the complaints from the public will be worse the next time.

To many, they thought Orchard Road is 'untouchable', the world class shopping mall. You find snobbery, expensive goods here but one morning was all it took to humble the place. Don't blame the debris, sudden downpour and the closure of the gates...all this should have been looked into. We all look at the outside, nobody looked at underneath, the government must ensure public safety and citizens can be better prepared next time one of it is to park your car at upper levels, avoid basement car parks. Bring survival kit like ropes ...fortunately no one was washed away.
