Which language would be the best for middle tier?

What language should I take in Middle School?

  • Hey guys. I'm in the 6th grade.. next year I will start 7th grade- Middle School. The MS sent home papers to the 6th graders, asking what language they want to take. I'm still not sure of what language I should take. I live up here in New York so I'm not sure if I will run into many Spanish people. There are only two options- FRENCH and SPANISH. What language did you take and what should I take? Thanks guys!

Hard chioice for me: I studied and teach both. But YOU have to choose. Here are a few thoughts that might help: You say you are "up here in New York." If you live in NY city, you will certainly run into lots of Spanish speakers. If you haven't so far, I'd be surprised, and don't think it'll be long before you do. Spanish speaking immigrants are the fastest growing group in the country, for this and other reasons, at the moment, Spanish is an imporatnt language to know and speak. If you're farther up in New York state as to be close to the Canadian border, then French might make some sense. It's a remarkable language, a little more challenging to learn than Spanish, but carries a lot of appeal.

I would recommend Spanish. French is in a state of rapid decline and is really no longer an international language. It is used in Quebec (and really nowhere else in Canada) France itself, part of Belgium, part of Switzerland and as the language of government and education in some parts of Africa. Spanish, on the other hand, is quite common anywhere in the Western Hemisphere. The idea that the United States will become a Spanish speaking country is childish and silly, but there is a very large population of Latino/as in the country, making it the most relevant foreign language for an American to learn. You'd be surprised how many Spanish speakers in New York. In October, I was in New York City to see a metal band from Portugal, and I was surprised that about half the audience was speaking Spanish. Metal and New York aren't normally associated with the Spanish language or Hispanics-- this goes to show how the language is beginning to be present in every aspect of American life. In addition, there is a huge demand for bilingual professionals (lawyers, doctors, etc) in the United States. French won't further any professional ambitions you may have.

Depends. If you're going to be a manual worker in the future (moving furniture, stealing, etc) then get Spanish. If you're going to be a professional worker, get French because it makes you more sophisticated.

I took three years of Spanish because I didn't see the usefulness of French. You would only need it if you actually went to France or Quebec. Spanish is more useful in our increasingly Latino population. Some geographers argue that spanish will actually be the dominant language in a few years.
