Can you learn a language fluently by just speaking it constantly everyday?
-
I am trying to learn spoken tamil. Not reading or writing. Just speaking it. I know already around 50% spoken tamil. Will I improve if I am constantly speaking tamil throughout the day to myself? Or by reading my textbooks which are in English and just translate them to Tamil as I speak? And if I don't know how to translate something from English to Tamil I'll ask my parents and learn that way. Will I improve by doing this? If so, how much do I need to speak a day for my to be very very fluent in about two years?

Answer:
Wow, you are committed! And, oh yes, you will be fluent in two years IF you do what you say. Just remember you also need to engage in conversation, and train your ear. YOU are awesome! Now, you see, that is what I ask those who want to learn a language to do. No one is going to learn a language and be fluent by attending a 45 minute class at school, go home and cheat on yahoo answers to get someone to do their homework.

It depends on what you mean by fluent. "Conversationally fluent" in a language requires learning about 700 words and basic conjugation and sentence structure. You can do that as you have been. To become truly fluent, thousands of words, including medical dialogue, legal stuff, words not heard everyday, you need school or constant study and about 10 years of constant immersion in different areas of Tamil life, like the courthouse, doctors, etc, where you will hear new words constantly spoken.

learning how to speak it is easier than learning to read and write it. However how do expect to improve your fluency by speaking the language to yourself, tell your parents and some people close to you what you are doing, and try talking to them in tamil so that they can correct you, and you can become more fluent. It might be a little awkward in the beginning, but don't give up if you really want to learn it. =)

Just talking to yourself? Sounds like a waste of time. Read a few books, watch movies with subtitles, listen to spoken radio, and/or better still, find some people who talk it to you and can can correct you if your grammar or pronunciation slips

Plenty of Tamil in Canada. Also a town near me has a decent sized Tamil community.
