Answer:
Watch movies involving people speaking english. You may not understand what they are saying all of the time but you will pick up bits and pieces. Make some friends from down the street that speak english. When your friends ask you something i am sure they would understand that you cannot speak english fluently. This will boost your confidence around them. Once you see them a lot you will not realise but you will start saying many english words. Also, read books aloud. Not complicated books, just simple books with sentences you may be able to say. This will help you to understand what the words means that you are saying. Just go with the flow.

Keep talking...that's the only way. Also listen to radio/TV English channels, where you hear proper English, for tuning your ears to the language.

I can completely understand what you must be feeling now, I moved to an english-speaking country when I was 13, couldn't speak a word of english and it feels terrible not being able to communicate. What I suggest you do, is read, read and read....all the books you can and if possible even read them out loud so you can practice on your pronunciation (which is probably the hardest part of learning a new language). I read everything I could find...from Nancy Drew to Dracula!!! Don't worry, before you know it you'll be even dreaming in english!!! I would say around six months and you will feel a lot more confident with your english...but that depends how much of your day you spend speaking english of course. Good luck!

How well you fit in and how fluently you will be able to speak depends on what country you originally came from, but here's the tip anyway, be confident, and talk to Australians, I'm Australian, and I like to think we are easy going nice sort of amicable folks (but we like to take the pi$$ out of each other, if we make fun of you, it means we like you) and yeah basically, you can only learn how to speak fluently by putting yourself in situations where you have to speak English with other people, or you'll never be able to do it, you have to get over that fear.

it depends on you, you need to practice at home and learn a basic vocabulary to express yourself. then, when talking to others, they will correct your English and also offer you new words and expressions. it should take you no more than a couple of months to greatly improve your English, and that's the good news. the bad news is that you need to put a lot of work into that, for it to happen.
