How Do I become a translator/interpreter when I grow up?

  • How do I become a translator/interpreter for a business when I grow up? what should I major in? and what languages should I learn? p.s. How much do translators/interpreters make? p.s.s. I DON'T want to be a freelance translator.

    u go 2 college 4 it. my sister loves languages and she is majoring in linguistics because she also want to be a translator/interpreter. she has already been 2 germany for 6th months(in her last year of highschool) so she learned fluent german over there she also knows fluent spanish because she went to mexico and her husband helps her and right now she is speaking italian and taking arabic classes. so my advice for u is to go to different countries because if your over there u pretty much have 2 speak it cuz thats wut language everybody over there speaks. also my sisters friend went to brazil for college and she speaks there lanugage fluent now. so u can also go to a college in a different country. thats the best idea. hope i helped =]

I suggest getting an M.A. in a specific language rather than a B.A. (master in Arts of language vs. Bachelor's in Arts of language). Pick a language that is demand, not something that is common, like Spanish. You get paid more for more languages you know and especially if it's something like Arabic, Chinese, Korean, or along those lines of need. Spanish, Japanese, French and I think Italian are on the outs because so many people speak them.
