Differences between Persian, Armenian, and Arabic?

What are the differences between Farsi Persian and other Persian languages like Pashto and Urdu?

  • Also, if I take up Farsi, will I be able to converse with Urdu and Pashto speakers?

  • Answer:

Persian (Farsi), Pashto and Urdu are all different languages. The speakers of these three languages can't understand each other. They might just catch a few words that are the same in these three languages. But they use rather the same alphabet to write, if you learn the alphabet, learning these three languages would become easier.

Farsi and Dari (Afghanistan) are essentially the same language, but with regional differences - some words may be pronounced different or have different vocabulary (not unlike English in the US). Pashto - I'm not sure if it's mutually intelligible with Farsi and Urdu - it may be considered an entirely different language. Urdu is NOT a Persian language - it's mutually intelligible with Hindi (for the most part) but Urdu has a heavy Arabic and Persian influence and Hindi doesn't (it has a Sanskrit influence).

Farsi, Pashto and Urdu are all different languages! The vocabulary is very different from each other, for example "how are you"in pashto is tsanga ye? but in farsi its "chetori" and in urdu its "Kya haal hai? (or) aap kaise hain?" However the grammar is very similar! Each of them follow the subject-object-verb format, also pashto and urdu have gender but Farsi does not. Out of all of them, the hardest to lean is Pashto, as it has different dialects and the grammar is more complex. If I were you I would learn Farsi first since it is the eaisest then move onto to Pashto and Urdu. By the way Urdu is virtually identical to Hindi and Urdu and Hindi Speakers can understand each other. However Farsi, Urdu, and Pashto can not be understood from just knowing Farsi. :) Hope this helped

Pashto, Urdu, and Persian are all IRANIAN languages. Persian isn't a language group, it's just a language. When people say Faris or Parsi, they are just talking about Persian. Iranian languages are divided into two categories. Eastern Iranian is Pashto and Urdu while Western Iranian is Persian and Kurdish. Persian is very different from Pashto or Urdu. You might be able to undrestand a few words but thats all.
