There are an awful lot of American accents. Believe me, someone from the South, or from New York City--you'd know they weren't Canadian. :-)

That's funny.. In America most folks can tell the difference between cockney and the "general" UK accents country, because a lot of them can't understand anything spoken with a true strong cockney accent. I should know, I've lived in the US, Canada and UK, and my american friends have run-into some of my relatives, and they're like "What the hell is he saying?!" They can tell the difference, but most don't know what the regional accents are called. Canadians have a tendency to say "Caowch" instead of the American "cowch" used over here when saying the word "Couch". The "ou" sound is different, but I'm not real knowledgeable about phonetics.. so you'll have to excuse me if that seems awkward. I say some words with an English accents, some with a Canadian one, but most with American accent... I don't realize I do it, but my friends tease me all the time when I use the Canadian ones ( "mouth, couch, etc."..) I can't hear the difference, but they find endless humor in it. :). Many Canadians also say "eh?" a lot, at the end of sentences, like some UK dialects do. Most Americans don't.. though some of the extremely northern regional American dialects do. Southern regions of America tend to say things like "Ya'll come back now, you hear?" Which translates to a friendly farewell meaning.. "hey, I'd love to have you folks come back here one day." But, to hear it spoken it sounds like" Yawl *** back nuh, yuh hear?" It's almost the American version of the cockney accent I guess. To many Americans, Canadian accents can be mistaken for English accents. It has a hint of the same "clipped" phrasing that the English use (though not as pronounced), while the Americans tend to draw out their vowels sounds. Some Canadians also use English phrases like "I' sussed it", which 99.9% of Americans have NO clue what that means. Spellingwise, Canadians also use the English spellings of most words.. In America, we use things like "color". Hope that helps a little.

Well, I won't be much help here, because I don't believe that there's an "American accent". There are so many different ways of speaking in America. The same word will sound completely different coming from people that live in the South East, the Mid-West, the East Coast, the South and the West Coast - For example, in California, they pronounce wash as "wahsh" - in the mid-west it's "warsh".

Canadians tend to pronounce words like out and about differently, but I have compared a girl from Minnesota, and a girl from Manitoba once, and there was no difference I could hear.
