How do you say "Who is this?" or "Who is that?" in Japanese?

How do You Say Who is it? in Japanese?

  • like when you are on the phone you say "mushi-mushi" [hello] then who is it? can anyone tell me how you would say it? ~thanks bye!!

  • Answer:

When you answer the phone you actually say, "Moshi moshi" but you were very close. :) 誰ですか? dare desuka Who is it? Or politely speaking: 失礼ですが、 Excuse me but, どちらさまですか。 who is calling? But usually when answering a phone in Japanese, after the person who picks up says "moshi moshi" the person on the other line will usually introduce himself/herself immediately so you shouldn't really ever have to ask who it is. Person A: Moshi moshi Person B: (Last name) no otaku desuka? Person A: Hai. Person B: (Person B's name) desu. (Person they wish to speak to) ni imasu ka? (or irasshaimasuka instead of imasuka if you wish to be extra polite and use keigo) A thing to remember is at the end of a phone call, in Japanese, if it's polite, usually Person A (the person who answers the phone) will apologize (especially if the person Person B is calling for isn't there). I hope this helped.

First of all, it's "moshi moshi." (もしもし) And it doesn't mean hello, it's just what is said when picking up the phone (there are multiple stories of how this greeting came to be used on the telephone). Say (word in parentheses is optional): どちら様ですか? dochira sama desuka? Who is this? dochira - who sama - polite ending for someone's name desuka - literally means "is what?" When picking up the phone in Japanese, you must always be extremely polite in case you are talking to a superior.

moshi-moshi / hai [hello] dochirasama desyou ka ? [who is it?] : commonly used, polite form. dochirasama? : casual dochira? : rude ^_^

Donata desu ka, Donata deshou ka --- Polite way Dare, Dare desu ka -- less polite I'd use the first one since you normally don't know who's calling. "Moshi moshi" is correct, not "mushi-mushi."
