How can I use Windows Live Messenger?

How can I use international characters/accents in Windows Live Messenger?

I've set the language settings for my Internet and Word programs to US-International so I can type these characters © € é ½ etc.... But I can't find an option that allows me to type them on Windows Live Messenger?
