Favorite way to say red wines in a german accent?

What does having a strong regional accent mean to you?

  • Im from NJ, but iv been all over the US so I dont have any regionalism in my accent. I have the standard American accent that is shown on TV. So anywhere I go in the US, people think that even though Im from the US, I dont have a particular US accent; or in other words, no accent at all. First of all, what does the phrase "you have no accent mean?" or "you have an accent mean?" What kind of connotation do you think these phrases/sentences have? Anyways, I keep seeing some people who say to others from a different region (Northerners to Southerners, or vice versa): "You have a really strong accent, tone it down" to the southerners, or other places of the North East (NY, Boston) as if its not such a great thing. Other people think that its really cool to have a strong regional accent, and represents people who are natives of those regions (their ancestors have lived there for a few generations in those regions). But even when people of one country talk to people from other countries, people think of others who have a different accent in a bit mocking way i guess, especially the way its portrayed on TV these days. What do you guys think?
