How to speak proper English when you are surrounded with people who speak broken english?

  • I'm a college student currently studying abroad. I choose to study in this country because the local people speak English as one of their languages. What I've discovered is that they couldn't speak proper English. I'm depressed. I thought I could practice my English in here, but now I'm afraid that I might speak broken English in the future, and I don't want that happen to me. I love English language.

    A few suggestions: 1) Get at least one good friend who speaks English well, and talk with him or her to sharpen your English skills, 2) Listen to short wave radio broadcasts from an English-speaking country like Canada or the USA or England (but not Australia, lol!!). 3) Watch BBC videos for news and information sources. 4) Read English newspapers from English speaking countries. 5) Read English books - especially the "classics" such as Charles Dickens or Mark Twain. These will help you learn lots of new words (use a good dictionary) and will help increase your familiarity with high-quality English. 6) Find people on the internet to speak English with via YM or Google voice chatting, 7) Get a good book on English grammer and usage, and study it well. thecanadianone's advice is good. However, it would help to know exactly where you are, because you may be mistaken about them speaking "broken" English. English has regional dialects - even among native English speakers, not all speak the standard form (General American in the USA, Received Pronunciation in the UK). It may be that they're speaking an acceptable dialect.

Listen to shows or watch movies where people speak proper English. That, or find someone who speaks English well, online, and ask them to talk to you and correct you in places where you need it. Even knowing how to write in proper English and use proper grammar is a good start. If you don't mind my correcting you: You said "I choose to study". More accurately that would be "I have chosen" or "I chose". "Choose" is present tense--something you're doing now. If you've already chosen to study here you have chose to do so, not choose. "I thought I could practice my English in here". The "in" wasn't necessary in this particular sentence. "I love English language". "English language" should have a "the" before it. Your English, by the way you type, is very good. Another good way to speak proper English is to read. Books are generally written rather professionally, so they have proper English in them, not broken English.
