TOEFL Internet-based?

Could someone please help me(if a TOEFL instructor or student even better=D)?

  • Hello I am a 19 year old girl trying to prepare for Toefl(IBT). My problem is when I am studying, and sometimes when I come up with a word that I don't know the meaning(I use online dictionary like: dictionary.reference.com ) still when I look up for it's meaning, l don't get what it means. Sometimes even to figure out what one word means, I have to look up for some other words like 5 or 6, and like 40 minutes has passed away and I still haven't figure out what that world means :( . Even the example sentence I read, I still don't get what it means.( I know I have to learn English by example sentences for the words I don't know their meanings) I don't use English to my own language dictionary, cause it confuses me more. Like it says 5 meanings for one word, that I don't know which one is correct or which one I have to know. I know this is stupid, but I really don't understand, that the online dictionary I use isn't good enough or something is wrong with the way I study. I go to Toefl class, and all the students have high level(they know most of the words, and anything you need for TOEFL), and usually they don't come across with a word they don't know. I know my level isn't ready for Toefl. BUT I really really want to get my Toefl so badly. What do you think I have to do to finally get the meaning of the word? What online dictionary is good? please, please, please, 10 points<3

  • Answer:

Context! For you to understand anything- it's all about CONTEXT! If you are standing in the middle of the road and a man asks you a question; it can be only a few things: Where is xxxx? (Directions) What's the time? How are you? Why are you standing in the middle of the road? Want a coffee? (He's hitting on you) When reading, think of the Subject Matter (usually in the title or summary), and read the whole thing, beginning to end, whether you understand or not. When you get to the end, think about the subject matter and everything you read and "guess" what it is about. Then, go back and read it again. Repeat two or three times. By now, through CONTEXT, you've worked out the majority of the words. Now guess, trial and error, or by now a dictionary will shed more light. If a word has various meanings, it depends on the CONTEXT which one it means. Rome wasn't built in a day!
