In my own experience, my dear, there's no need to bother. They're all such randy young sauce-pots they're forever snogging me before I get a chance to speak at all! It can be a little trying for a genteel lady of my advancing years but I am English and cannot bring myself to refuse them. Don't want to appear unsporting, you know!

Hang out with Americans..that should help. For me...when I hang out with my British friends, all the sudden I start to THINK with a British accent..really, it can happen. I don't hang out with my closest British friend much anymore..her teeth look like Indian corn or burnt toast, depending on the light..and things would fall out of her mouth while she'd be trying to speak more loudly and slowly so that we could understand WOT SHI WOZ SAY-IN!

My American friends struggled to understand me until I started putting a large handful of pebbles in my mouth before speaking. We now communicate beautifully so I can only assume I'm now fluent in USAish to the point of sounding native. Of course, Americans like perfect gnashers and since I have none left they don't call me so often. Good luck!

Funny... all the famous Americans are trying to sound English. Leftfoot has learned well. She can now do a Long Island, Philadelphia, and New England accent effortlessly. And we understand her perfectly when she says 'wot!'

You have to be able to hear yourself. Otherwise you'll not be able to change the way you pronounce your words. You are right about this country having many different accents, depending on what part of the country a person is from. I think the best would be to listen to national news broadcasters. They have no accent because their diction is close to perfect. Imperfect diction is usually causes an accent.

Learning an accent is like learning to ride a bike. You must learn by doing it. I suggest you should have a lot conversation with American people, or even hang out with them.

I have no idea how to help you. I grew up in the midwest, then moved down south 27 years ago, and still sound like a midwesterner. I've heard that an American accent is the hardest to pick up.

I'm from California and I have an "American accent" (didn't know we had one!) I answered this question because of an answer on here from someone named "JjP". Her answer was so hilarious I sat here and laughed out loud. lol lol. This is my way of finding it again.
