Really quick question for french speakers..?

How long does it take me to get fluent in french. question for non-native french speakers?

  • i've talked to a certified french teacher, the one i'm gonna hire to teach me french 5 days a week, everyday for 2 hours. he has promised me that if i put all my mind n energy into it (im gonna study french about 6 hours a day) i'll be able to speak french fluently after 6 months. is it possible? i just know a few words in french n a little bit of english.

  • Answer:

no, not completely fluently. in order to speak like a native speaker one would have to live in france, picking up local words, slang and other phrases. while you would know all of the "dictionary" french, you would not fully sound french. also, to pick up an accurate accent and be able to understand what people say to you (i.e. when they speak quickly) then you would need to spend several years practising, but six months should give you a good foundation for the language :)

I think it's possible if you really focus on your studies and do work outside of the French classes. For me, speaking French is the hardest part. Immerse yourself in the culture--listen to French music, watch French movies, listen to French language tapes, etc. After your 6 months of classes it would be fabulous if you did some sort of immersion program--believe me, they really work! Good luck!

You're not going to be fluent after just 6 months of study. Even if you lived in France and spoke nothing but French you would not be fluent after 6 months. If you put a lot of effort into this, you will probably speak French quite well at the end of your six months. But you are not going to be fluent.
